5 Aftr 5 Jazz Trio Performs At The Distinctive Cork In Naperville, Illinois

The slogan is: Jazz, smooth & otherwise. That really sums up the group 5 Aftr 5. The band masterfully mixes straight ahead classics along with contemporary jazz tunes to create a sound and mood that is unique among Chicago area instrumental groups.

The concept for 5 aftr 5 began toward the end of 1998.  The idea being that the group should be just as comfortable playing jazz standards as it would be playing R&B and funk. The group may even throw in the occasional original composition, just to liven things up.

As the name implies, everything has to be done after work. Music is chosen and arranged in shows that can be performed as all straight-ahead jazz, all contemporary jazz, or any combination that fits the job at hand. 5 aftr 5 respects few musical boundaries so there are quite few surprises in the band's repertoire.

In the band’s relatively short history 5 Aftr 5 has entertained large crowds at outdoor festivals in Chicago and many of the outlying suburbs. Successful appearances include Chicago’s Velvet Lounge, The Drury Lane Theatre, The Avenue Ale House, Hecky’s Jazz Club in Evanston, and a host of corporate and private events. Among 5 aftr 5’s crowning achievements have been rave performances at the WFLD main stage at the 2001 Taste of Chicago, the Fox stage at the 2006 Taste of Chicago, and Chicago’s Jazzfest 2000. The group as also opened for jazz greats Kenny Burrell, Arturo Sandival and Jimmy Smith.
